Simpler Recycling Regulations: What You Need To Know

Every year, recycling rates across the UK increase, but given our ever-growing population and the amount we’re throwing away, it’s clear that we need to do more. Simply throwing our waste into the nearest recycling bin is no longer enough; instead, we need a clearer and more consistent way to sort and process waste.

That’s why, as of 31st March 2025, new waste management regulations have been introduced in an effort to make the process simpler and curb confusion over what can and can’t be recycled. But what is Simpler Recycling? The team here at SCS Waste is here to talk you through what this new policy means for your business.

What is Simpler Recycling?

Introduced as part of The Environment Act 2020 Regulations 2024, Simpler Recycling is a government initiative that aims to reduce the amount of food waste that goes to landfill unnecessarily.

Under the terms of Simpler Recycling, households and workplaces across England must sort their waste into four different bins:

  • Non-recyclable waste
  • Food waste
  • Paper and cardboard
  • All other recyclable materials (plastic, glass, metal, etc)

While many businesses most likely had recycling bins in place already, the major difference is that they now must supply a food waste bin, even if the workplace doesn’t serve food or have a kitchen. Employees must also be educated and provided with clear guidance on what can and can’t be put in each bin; there may be certain waste that is an exception to the rules.

Failure to separate waste appropriately may result in your business receiving a Compliance Notice from the Environment Agency. This may then see you hit with a hefty fine and restrictions on how you can operate your business.

Who does Simpler Recycling affect?

To put it plainly, Simpler Recycling affects everyone. While these changes will only apply to larger businesses initially, they will eventually catch up to households and smaller businesses until there is a universal recycling system in place that is second nature for everyone to follow.

When does Simpler Recycling come into effect?

This all depends on the size of your business.

For businesses consisting of 10 or more full-time employees, these new rules were implemented on the 31st of March 2025.

From 31st March 2026, local authorities will begin to introduce separate weekly food waste collections for households. However, the exact roll-out date will likely vary depending on where you’re located.

By 31st March 2027, all small businesses with fewer than 10 full-time employees must comply with the Simpler Recycling regulations.

Why has Simpler Recycling been introduced?

  • It increases recycling rates
  • It reduces landfill
  • It establishes a clear, standardised waste management procedure nationwide
  • It supports sustainability goals
  • It reduces contamination in recyclable waste
