Tips on Hiring a Skip for a Garage Clearance

There are so many reasons you might be thinking of clearing out your garage. Perhaps you’ve collected a lot of items you no longer need, or maybe you simply want to make more of the space, allowing you to park your car there or create your own home gym. Whatever the reason, skip hire for a garage clearance is a great way to get rid of lots of different items in one go, giving you a fresh canvas to work with.

At SCS Waste, we provide a range of skips for garage clearances, but to help you figure out what you can put in a skip and which skip size is best, we’ve put together this handy guide.

What size skip do I need for a garage clearance?

Which size skip you select for your garage clearance will depend largely on how big your garage is and how much waste you’re looking to get rid of. You may have a large garage but only want a small skip for a few items or, on the other hand, you may have a small garage that is jam-packed with items, meaning you need a larger skip.

You can see our full range of skip sizes and dimensions here, but we recommend either the 2-yard mini skip or a 4-yard midi skip for a garage clearance. These hold roughly 45 and 85 bags of waste respectively, but if you have larger, bulkier items – such as the garage door itself – you may want to consider a 6-yard skip.

If you’re looking to minimise the amount of waste you put in your skip, you could try donating some of your useful items first to save money on skip hire while helping the planet by recycling. Your old bikes and garden furniture might be just what someone else is looking for.

How to dispose of an old garage door

When you have your new garage door delivered and fitted by a professional garage door company, they will most likely take the old door away and recycle it as part of the service.

But what if they don’t? Or, what if you are fitting a new door yourself and need to dispose of the old one? The good news is that if your old door is made of wood, metal or plastic, it can be accepted in a skip. As we mentioned earlier, you may want to factor this into the size of the skip you hire, especially if you have no safe way of breaking up the door into smaller parts.

Not sure if your garage door will fit in a skip? Give us a call and chat with our team to make sure before hiring your skip – we’re always happy to assist you to help save you time and money.
